Main Function

  • Reports to Guest Relations Manager via Chief Hostess or Concierge

  • Promotion Train As Bellboys (and girls) work within the Guest Services organization, they may be promotable to the Guest Services infrastructure. Others may be better promoted to Housekeeping, Cashless area cadets, Dining services or as Pest Control Technicians.

Fundamental of Position

  • Bellboys (and bell girls) assist in the shipboard equivalent of a land-based concierge facility within the reception area.
  • The basic function is to provide a 24-hour message and general hotel assistance service for Guests and the Hotel Management department of the ship.
  • Bellboys are generally selected because of their ‘can do anything’ nature and pleasant attitude towards Guests and the ship in general.
  • This is a position of full and frequent Guest contact, and a good knowledge of human communication skills is necessary. Bellboys perform an important Public Relations job for the Ship, and are required to be good-natured, friendly and polite

Requirements & Documents

The following documents are required for this position

  1. Basic Safety Training Certificate including Advanced Firefighting experience and Swimming & Rowing c competence.
  2. All other certification (including visas etc.) required including Compliance with the requirements of STCW 95 regarding certification for this position aand all documents in force at the time of your employment to comply with the Flag State requirements of the ship to which you are assigned.
  3. You must be in possession of a valid Panama Seaman’s Book.

Language skills          

  • Fluent in oral and written English (working & Safety language of the Company)
  • Ability to speak German.
  • Ability to speak, read and write in any major other languages (Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French,  etc.) is considered a major advantage that could eventually influence the selection for some positions.

Experience

  • A minimum of 12 months in a similar land-based or shipboard position. References and certificates will be necessary.

Health: Validated current documentation certifying the health and fitness of the applicant meets fundamental requirements of seagoing personnel on basis of assigned office and verifying all sanitary precautions have been taken against diseases that may be endemic to the cruising area.

Team Attributes: Proven ability to work in a harmonious productive team environment

Qualifications

  • High School graduate
  • Bellboys (or bell girls) should have a background in a similar shoreside operation (5-star International hotel) or an internationally-trading cruise ship.
  • 12 months experience in a reception facility in a hotel or cruise ship will be an advantage. All claims concerning past experiences require verification.
  • Bellboys with experience as Pest Control helpers will generally have priority
  • Applicants with experience in high speed, 4-color printing machinery will be given priority.
  • Basic computer skills in Windows-based programs.

Physical Requirements

The following physical requirements apply to this position

  • • While performing the duties of this job, you may be regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell.
  • •You must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 Kg.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • You must be physically able to participate in emergency life saving procedures and drills.
  • Full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats.
  • If working in any Guest area (or where Guests may see you), you are not permitted to display any tattoos on any exposed part of your body when wearing uniform (summer or winter).

Safety & Discipline

You are required to:

  • Read, understand and implement the Mission Statement of the Company.
  • Read, understand and follow the MSC Crew Regulations ensuring all personnel in the Housekeeping department have copies, and comply accordingly.
  • Wear the complete prescribed uniform and name badge as specified in Company Standards, complying with regulations relating to tattoos, hair and body decorations.
  • Attend and participate as required in all emergency drills, carry personal emergency card, and understand emergency duties.

Responsibilities

Bellboys are required to perform the following duties:

  • Sanitation: Have basic training in Sanitation, as some of their duties may involve the delivery of Guest food when required in case of high Room Service demand.
  • Printing facility: Operate the Ship’s printing facility. This requires training and experience with high-speed color printing and high-volume photocopy machinery.
  • Print room inventory: Be responsible for the day-to-day inventory of printing consumables (ink, paper, masters etc), always ensuring there is an adequate supply of this material in the Printing Room for the following day and re-ordering supplies as needed.
  • Print room in order: Maintain the printing room in good, safe and clean condition.
  • Printing duties: Print all daily programs in all languages required, and all printed matter including (but not limited to) shore excursion and destination information, menus, advertising material for concession personnel, crew lists etc.)
  • Disabled Guests: Help where required by the Guest Services department as a member of the Disabled Guest assistance team.
  • Pest Control duties: Where certified and assigned by contract, perform the duties of the Pest Control Technician
  • Message service: Collect incoming messages from the Radio Station and deliver to recipients around the ship.
  • Guest assistance: Assist Guests embarking and disembarking at the shore side of the gangway. This duty may involve working ashore where landings are made by tender or lifeboat.
  • Missing Luggage: Assist when available to locate missing luggage, and to deliver this to appropriate cabins.
  • Emergency duties: Stand by for emergency or extraordinary duties in ports of embarkation and disembarkation.
  • Alcohol collection: If required by the Hotel Director, operate the gangway alcohol-collection facility for Guests and/or Crew.
  • Receptionist duties: 13. During periods of repair and/or wet and dry dock (when Guests are not on board), Bellboys may be required to operate the Reception desk, making announcements as required.
