Logistics Manager (Packaging)
(Location: GBS Belgrade)
Primary purpose of position:
This role is to design, implement and manage the right packaging strategy for BBPE addressing the business’ cost, quality, service and sustainability objectives.
- Strategy: supported by the head of logistics define and implement a 5-year roadmap for packaging
- Cost: improve year on year cost performance as measured per thousand cans made
- Quality: working with sourcing and re-engineering processes and controls reduce complaints and losses
- Service: ensure 100% availability of packaging for production whilst keeping to agreed inventory plan
- Sustainability: work with the sustainability team agree and implement within the 5-year roadmap
Reports to: Head of Logistics
Main tasks:
Packaging capacity planning
- Annual preparation of the packaging requirements for the BBPE strat plan; compile the capex requirements for budget, each financial forecast for the region.
- Monthly capacity planning of packaging requirements:
- Ensure adequate packaging is in the system for all size/material combinations of pallets, top frames and plastic layer pads. Build AFEs for review by the Capital Committee and ensure sign off before raising POs.
- Conduct additional checks for specific regions (as per uniqueness of size in the region) before AFE is submitted to Capital Committee: Nordic, Italy & UK (for UK size packaging only) and Egypt, India, Turkey & Russia regions
- Support Sourcing with the commercial negotiation with plastic packaging suppliers & service providers
- Purchase of the following capital items: Plastic layer pads, Plastic top frames, Plastic pallets (cans & ends), steel top frames. Purchase wooden pallets / top frames where necessary/relevant.
- Attend the Capital Committee monthly meeting to present the case for any packaging AFE
Packaging process improvement
- Drive through packaging development projects to:
- Ensure accurate packaging count information in SAP (95%+ accuracy)
- Define, monitor and improve packaging KPIs
- Minimise cost to serve of returnable packaging:
- Footprint of packaging sortation/wash stations: review & optimise packaging flows
- Optimise frequency of washes
- Build business cases for wash / sortation improvements e.g. automated handling,
- Trial new types of packaging.
- Standardise packaging wherever possible / cost effective
Packaging process management
- Coordinate all activities related to plastic pallet/plastic layer pad scanning/wash service providers: set wash standards (including swab tests, detergents used etc), monitor volume washed, scanned & spend
- Working with the regional logistics managers, co-ordinate the movement of common pallet sizes (German/Spanish) between markets to balance packaging inventory
- Ensure adherence to Ball packaging EQPs
- Control and manage provision of freight rates across the region
- Manage flows of plastic end pallets from the sort stations back to the manufacturing plants
- Analysis of packaging returns and transfers of packaging out to supporting plants
- Implement and manage the process of customer packaging returns ensuring cost recovery where appropriate
Team
- Provide leadership, management support and direction to the Logistics supply chain analyst, the single direct report into this role. Note the analyst has broader responsibilities than packaging and supports all of logistics
General
- As a core member of the logistics team, the packaging manager will work closely with the rest of the logistics team (head of logistics, warehousing and freight as well as the regional logistics managers). They will contribute to the broader logistics strategy and management activity participating the weekly, monthly and quarterly governance processes. Requirements:
Professional & Educational Qualifications
- BA degree / Business or Logistics qualification
- Post graduate in Logistics desirable
Previous experience
- Experience in freight and/or logistics
- Experience in negotiating freight rates
- Experience in pan-European organisations
- Extensive knowledge on all modes of delivery such as trucking, shipping or train.
- Must be familiar with the corresponding fees like international tariffs, warehouse storage charges and weight costs
