About the role 

The Manager, Contracts will be responsible for all commitments made and contracts awarded on the Jadar Project: ensuring due process is followed; the project’s needs are met; and the best commercial outcomes are reached for the long term benefit of Rio Tinto.  

As the leader of the Contracts team, you will lead and give direction and cohesiveness to the team; managing the individuals in the team to maximize their value to Rio Tinto and to encourage each person’s development and job satisfaction. 

Reporting to the General Manager Project Services. you will be: 

  • Responsible for all contracts/commitments - ensuring robust commercial arrangements are established and maintained, training and working with the PMC Contracts team on the use of appropriate contract management methods, tools and processes, ensuring acceptable risk allocation by use of model documents and controls on deviations, encouraging timely resolution of contractor issues and claims. 
  • Accountable for diverse range of individuals forming the Contracts Team - their performance, development, succession and retention- by daily coaching, leading and mentoring so as to enable maximum mutual value and benefit to the business and to each individual. 
  • Ensuring best practice and sharing of knowledge by communicating and collaborating with the team, to maximize value for the business. 
  • Approving contracting strategies, plans, justifications and other documents essential for due process and planning, to enable smooth and timely implementation of the projects. 
  • Contracting function responsible for contracting methodologies and strategies: analysing risks and needs, articulating strategies and structuring and drafting appropriate contracts so as to give maximum value to the business. 
  • Ensuring a two-way dialogue is maintained between the Contracts team, RT Projects Legal, and RT Procurement to complement the efforts and skills of all groups for the maximum benefit of Rio Tinto. 
  • Responsible for contracting and corporate governance procedures which should be up to date and reflect best practice. 
  • Responsible for contractor/contracts related programme wide initiatives, arrangements and systems, including: negotiating (with input from RT Projects Legal) and ongoing management of framework agreements with key contractors; management of the contracts management system; electronic approvals system initiative. 

About you 

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have: 

  • 10+ years, including hands on experience, in the construction/projects industry. 
  • Experience in working on mine development projects. 
  • Management and leadership experience 
  • Excellent analytical skills to immediately identify the real issues in a discussion or document 
  • Ability to absorb and retain a large amount of information from various sources and on different topics 
  • Team focused  
  • Energy to seize opportunities/ take the initiative, and to drive change 
  • Ability to understand engineering concepts supporting design and construction of mines and associated infrastructure 

Where you will be working 

The Jadar project is a greenfield Underground mine and process plant development located approximately 40km south-east of Loznica, Serbia. An underground mine, comprising of a production shaft, exhaust shaft, development levels, access to production stopes, mobile mining equipment and associated infrastructure. The process plant is designed to produce boric acid, lithium carbonate and sodium sulfate. 

Jadar project commenced the feasibility study in Aug 2020. The project business strategy is to develop Jadar as a core, Tier 1 asset with synergies with Rio Tinto Business, enabling a green future and creating value for both Rio Tinto and Serbia. The project execution goal is to derive maximum value from Jadar for its stakeholders, while also delivering on the promised outcomes.

The Jadar Project is a world-class lithium-borate deposit discovered by Rio Tinto in 2004. Jadar is a unique deposit near the town of Loznica, Serbia. It contains Jadarite - a new lithium sodium borosilicate mineral. Jadar is the only place in the world where this mineral can be found. Jadar has been ranked as one of the largest lithium deposits in the world with a potential to supply a significant amount of the global demand for lithium and boric acid. If developed, Jadar will be a modern underground mine with efficient processing and shipping facilities.
