 New Position

The Australian Embassy, Belgrade is accredited to three countries in the region: Serbia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Montenegro. We are seeking a highly qualified person to manage the work of the Policy and Trade Section and contribute to the mission’s policy objectives. The Manager Policy and Trade Section will oversee the work of the section and assist the Ambassador to meet policy deliverables, including in business/trade promotion, political/economic reporting, cultural, media and public diplomacy strategies and visit programs. You will also help manage the work of the section and assist team members to meet required outputs.

The position requires appropriate tertiary qualifications in international relations/politics or a similar discipline, demonstrated supervisory/management skills and excellent oral and written English language skills. Knowledge of trade policy would be useful. A duty statement and selection criteria are below. Short‐listed candidates will be required to undergo testing of English skills as part of the selection process.


Duty Statement:

  • Supervise the work of the Embassy’s Policy and Trade Section in consultation with the Ambassador, including political/economic reporting, business/trade promotion and developing cultural, media and public diplomacy strategies.
  • Provide accurate and insightful analysis and daily briefing on political developments in countries of accreditation and regionally.
  • Draft and update key policy documents, including cables, on emerging issues of interest to Australia.
  • Respond quickly to tasking and other developments of significance to Australia.
  • Make representations to relevant authorities in countries of accreditation as required to advance Australia’s interests.
  • Develop and maintain a wide range of useful contacts to contribute to the Embassy’s reporting and knowledge base, including working with Australia’s Honorary Consul in Skopje.
  • Assist the Ambassador with the political aspects, including briefing and meeting arrangements, for visits from and to Australia.
  • Provide high‐level, accurate and effective interpreting services and translation of documents as required.

Selection Criteria:

  • Tertiary qualifications in international relations/politics or a similar discipline. An understanding of trade policy would be an advantage.
  • Excellent analytical and conceptual skills, with demonstrated experience in policy analysis, political reporting and highly developed research skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Balkans region and the political environment in countries of accreditation, including future directions.
  • Demonstrated supervisory/management skills in a policy environment such as a foreign embassy, academia or a regional or international non‐government organisation.
  • Highly developed oral and written English‐language and interpreting/translation skills.
  • The ability to work unsupervised. Demonstrated flexibility, adaptability, team work and good interpersonal skills.
