Senior Operations Engineer

Vast is seeking an senior DevOps and operations engineers to join our Serbia and U.S.-based Operations team.

At Vast we are building a big data platform to serve some of the largest brands in the Autos (AOL, Yahoo!, TrueCar), Real Estate (USAA) and Travel (Southwest Airlines) markets and build a suite of products that brings big data to big purchases.

As a Senior Operations Engineer you will be part of the Operations team, working closely with Engineering to build, maintain and optimize anything from Java/Scala services, Node.js applications, Storm, Hadoop and Cassandra clusters. We are looking for candidates who have a wide experience in Linux system administration, public/private cloud solutions, big data, and database management.

Expect to work very closely with engineers in both Serbia but also the U.S. and Ukraine in a DevOps capacity.

Responsibilities:

• Working with the Engineering team to design, build and maintain scalable systems that support high traffic web services and back-end tools and applications.
• Planning and executing projects to improve production infrastructure.
• Performing and automating production deployments.
• Self-managed projects related to improving Vast’s systems.
• Proactive and extensive communication with Vast co-workers and business partners, in both Serbia and the U.S.
• Participation in the 24x7, multi-tier on-call rotation.

Requirements:

• 5+ years Linux administration experience (Red Hat based distributions preferred).
• 3+ years prior experience supporting a LAMP environment.
• Ability clearly communicate in both written and spoken English.
• General systems programming / scripting experience (Python, Perl or PHP).
• TCP/IP configuration and troubleshooting skills.
• 24x7 availability as required by the shared on-call schedule.

Desired Skills:

• Experience with AWS, Hadoop, Cassandra, ZooKeeper, Couchdb or CloudStack.
• Xen or KVM based virtualization experience.
• Expert level MySQL or PostgreSQL administration with a focus on high-availability.
• Prior large scale systems management experience.
• System management using tools like fabric, chef, and rundeck
• Advanced Java tuning and troubleshooting
• Prior experience with Cisco and Juniper network devices.
