Health Promotion & Intercultural Mediator Supervisor

Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is an international humanitarian organization providing assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims or armed conflicts, irrespective of race, religion, creed or political convictions.

Main Purpose of the Position

In close collaboration with the Mobile Health Activities Manager (MHAM), implementing and supervising educational campaigns according to MSF values, standards and procedures in order to increase awareness of the targeted population and to promote prevention and treatment of diseases in the project area.

Contributing to the provision of quality intercultural mediation services in the project (by MSF and other actors) by supervising a team of intercultural mediators (ICM) according to MSF values, standards and procedures in order to foster the removal of linguistic and cultural barriers and improve the quality of and access to quality health care and socio/legal services.

Accountabilities

  • In close collaboration with the Health Promotion (HP) Referent, Information Education Communication (IEC) Referent, Medical Coordinator and MHAM, participating in the definition and update of the HP / IEC strategy and identifying indicators in order to monitor HP activities, results, and achievements. Supporting the team in organizing and carrying out assessments and research on the impact of HP activities and identifying and reporting the constraints, difficulties or strength points of the HP strategy inside and outside the medical structures in order to reinforce the link between the communities and the project
  • Providing support in selecting and developing quality pedagogical communication strategies towards the community. Planning information campaigns, including targets, objectives, methods and goals in order to increase awareness among the targeted population.
  • Informing, according to protocols, community members and identified risk groups about healthrelated issues
  • Organizing health awareness sessions for MSF's medical and non-medical staff
  • Actively supporting the intercultural mediators team and ensuring the day-to-day implementation of intercultural mediation activities at project level, including (but not limited to) managing dynamics in the trialogue communication between mediator, patient and care provider; preventing and managing possible misunderstandings, communication blockages and tension; interpreting;
  • Psychological First Aid (PFA); information and orientation (e.g. sociolegal); collecting testimonies and providing emotional support;
  • Supervising the intercultural mediators in terms of planning and organizing, data collection and reporting.
  • Identifying key actors (local authorities, local NGOs, formal or informal authorities) and being the focal point for the networking in order to support the dissemination of health information of the target population and be the point of reference for the relation and networking with these subjects.
  • Organizing, training, and supervising the mobile team in terms of planning and organizing their work, supporting, evaluating and coaching of personnel, collecting reports and reporting the activities of each ICM and regularly visiting communities that are under his/her responsibility
  • Supervising, in close collaboration with the HR department, the HR associated processes (recruitment, training/induction, evaluation, potential detection, development and communication) of the staff under his/her responsibility in order to ensure both the sizing and the amount of knowledge required
  • Collecting and reporting to the medical team any information linked to the health situation of the population and the patient
  • Implementing relevant trainings for the intercultural mediators in collaboration with the relevant referent/activity managers (MHAM, Humanitarian Affairs Officer) to ensure the required level of knowledge in the team;
  • Ensuring proper collaboration, communication and information sharing between the intercultural mediators and the different activities/departments.

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

  • Working closely with the medical doctor and having daily briefings on planned activities and feedbacks from beneficiaries.
  • Collecting Patient Survey Forms and providing feedback to the field team and managers.
  • Encoding data in KOBO, DHIS 2 and reporting on weekly and monthly basis.
  • Other tasks as required by the project coordination.

Requirements:

  • Essential diploma in social sciences or education/pedagogy
  • Essential working experience of 1 year minimum in health promotion activities or training education activities in migration/refugees programs
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and Serbian
