About the Company:
AMETEK, Inc. is a leading global manufacturer of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices with annual sales of approximately $7.4 billion.
AMETEK has 17,000 colleagues at more than 150 operating locations, and a global network of sales, service and support locations in 30 countries around the world.
The AMETEK Growth Model combines its four growth strategies of Operational Excellence, Strategic Acquisitions, Global & Market Expansion, and New Product Development, with a disciplined focus on cash generation and capital deployment. By executing the AMETEK Growth Model, the company seeks to generate shareholder value by doubling earnings per share over the course of each business cycle.
AMETEK consists of two operating groups, both with highly differentiated technology and leading positions in niche markets:
Electronic Instruments - a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of advanced analytical, test and measurement instrumentation for the energy, aerospace, power, research, medical and industrial markets.
Electromechanical - a differentiated supplier of automation and precision motion control solutions, and highly engineered electrical interconnects, specialty metals and thermal management systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own end to end Magnetic design for Slotted and Slotless BLDC, PMDC, Stepper, and Brushtype motors (rotary & linear) in the fractional/subfractional class
- Design and model electromagnetic components and motor topologies using SolidWorks 3D and ANSYS Maxwell/RMxprt (or equivalents like JMAG, Motor‑CAD, SPEED, FEMM)
- Execute end-to-end EM workflows: material models (BH curves), Meshing, torque/back‑EMF predictions, cogging/ripple analysis, demagnetization margin checks (temperature derating, worst‑case currents), and loss modeling (copper/iron/stray).
- Quantify and optimize trade-offs such as torque density (air-gap flux, magnet utilization, winding factor), cogging/ripple (permeance variation, harmonic content), and manufacturing cost (laminations, winding methods, potting/encapsulation, sleeves)
- Implement mitigation strategies including skew, fractional-slot windings, tooth-tip shaping, Magnet arc/Halbach configurations, and advanced control methods like FOC or sinusoidal control
- Work closely with the controls team to align motor control methods (like basic vs advanced commutation), fine-tune current control, and confirm compatibility between the motor and drive system (voltage, inverter capacity, and design needs)
- Build thermal models (conduction/convection/radiation), estimate winding hotspots, and define cooling strategies (varnish, potting, heat sinking)
- Consider rotor dynamics and balance standards appropriate to small motors
- Collaborate effectively with customers, suppliers, sales, and internal departments both on-site and remotely. Apply knowledge of motor drives, motor testing, and manufacturing methods
- Manage multiple projects within the New Product Introduction (NPI) phase gate process. Execute design procedures including material selection, technology application, and ensuring project requirements are met on time and within budget
- Make quick and effective decisions in a dynamic engineering environment. Communicate clearly and organize tasks efficiently across cross-functional teams.
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering; Master’s degree preferred
- 7–12 years of experience in Motor design, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Solid understanding of PMDC, BLDC, Stepper architectures
- Working exposure to Design and model electromagnetic components and motor topologies using ANSYS or equivalent Magnetics Simulation tools
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret customer specifications, scientific and technical journals
- Ability to confidently and effectively present to and interact with Associates from Business Unit
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Demonstrated strong PC skills and excellent working knowledge of engineering principles
- Willingness to travel up to 3–5%
- Exposure to the entire product lifecycle—driving motor design from concept and prototyping through rigorous validation—while aligning cost, manufacturability, reliability goals to ensure successful transition into production.
- Deep knowledge of material properties, protective coatings, and thermal management techniques for achieving high performance in compact motor designs
- Familiarity with global standards such as IP ratings, EMI/EMC compliance, REACH, RoHS, and relevant mechanical/electrical safety regulations
- Ability to manage timelines, budgets, and collaborate with global teams, including suppliers and manufacturing partners
- Fluent in English
- Comfortable learning and adopting new AI-enabled ways of working and proactively identifying opportunities where AI can drive meaningful impact in daily activities
