Description:

Since September 2015 Oxfam is responding to the migrant influx to Europe and aims to meet the needs of people on the move in need of protection. Oxfam is responding in Serbia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYRoM), Greece and in Italy (Sicily) through partners or through direct services delivery (Greece). The responses, that primarily respond to the needs of the affected migrants and refugees aim to deliver relevant and credible information for the purpose of global and national influencing of engaged publics and decision makers The responses in the countries are aligned by one agreed Strategic Plan that is backed up by a well-developed influencing plan.

The initial response focused on the Serbian borders with Macedonia, Hungary, Bulgaria and Croatia, and the Macedonian border with Greece.

Currently OIT in Serbia manages ECHO funded projects and it is transitioning to EUTF funding. OIT is the Leader organization of a Consortium (with CARE and CARITAS) which will provide access to food in 15 governmental facilities hosting migrants, asylum seekers and refugees in Serbia. Under the supervision of the Strategic Partnership Manager the Media and Communications Consultant will identify and develop relations with all relevant stakeholders in Serbia that support the Consortium strategies to accelerate project implementation.

Main Responsibilities:

The post reports to the Oxfam Consortium Strategic Partnership Manager in Belgrade at the Consortium office.

His/her main responsibilities will be to:

  • Build relationships with journalists visiting field locations, facilitate media visits to field operations, coordinate media interview requests from journalists to spokespeople
  • Responding to media enquiries, setting up interviews, managing media logistics at events and closely monitoring all media coverage of Oxfam and Consortium
  • Ensure a regular stream of testimonies/stories, together with photos and video footage of beneficiaries, and blogs is available to the Oxfam confederation to generate media coverage and to share with members of the public
  • Development of Consortium’s database of media contacts, and identifying gaps in the engagement with specific outlets and journalists and seeking to develop new relationships
  • Identifying opportunities for press coverage around events and specific publications and working with SPM to develop targeted media strategies, including drafting press releases
  • Overseeing the distribution of bulk emails (press releases and invitations) to journalists, and working to make this form of communication more targeted and effective
  • Helping to ensure Oxfam’s social media channels remain engaging and active, including monitoring commentary on the institute
  • Provide communications support and media coverage of sustainability component: strengthening social cohesion and sensitizing host communities on the experiences of migrants

Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of experience in media, social media and communications – writing media products, organizing journalist visits, media liaison.
  • Experience in handling sensitive information in a responsible manner and managing risk
  • Strong writing, editing and design skills
  • Ability to take high quality photos
  • Ability to do high quality work at speed and under pressure
  • Willingness to travel a lot and at short notice
  • Identifies with Oxfam and humanitarian values
  • Has a sense of humor, good interpersonal skill and strong team-working skills
  • Enthusiastic team player with strong interpersonal skills, a good temperament and an appetite for building relationships with journalists
  • Knowledge of and interest in current migration related affairs and international relations is essential, along with experience of dealing with the media
  • Ability to adapt and work in difficult situations with proven successes in working under pressure and in stressful environments
  • Commitment to a rights-based approach, gender equality and protection
  • Knowledge of humanitarian principles
  • Culturally sensitive and able to understand and work in complex contexts
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Serbian

The following qualifications will be considered as an asset:

  • Interest and motivation to work in a non-profit organization
  • Video production and editing skills
  • Proven previous experiences working with local NGOs as partners
  • Knowledge and previous experience in the country and in the region
