The Disinformation Analyst will be a member of The Trend, Reputation, Analysis, and Knowledge Unit (TRAK), in charge of open-source data and information analysis to support decision-making for crisis response and risk anticipation and mitigation. TRAK has a multidisciplinary team in Belgrade providing analytical services, such as social listening, harmful information detection and analysis, audience profiling, communication performance analysis as well as thematic & global trends analysis to TRAK’s key clients within the organization.

The person will be in charge of the detection and analysis of disinformation across digital platforms leveraging advanced research and analytical tools.  By providing in-depth and timely insights to inform the decision-making, he/she will contribute to the institutional efforts to understand, anticipate, and mitigate harmful information against humanitarian action. The analyst will support the coordination and establishment of a solid global detection system, contribute to the institutional threat intelligence efforts, and actively engage with other concerned units. This role requires a technically proficient professional with a background in social media analysis, OSINT, and risk analysis who can handle nuanced and fast-evolving disinformation threats on a global scale.

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Leads efforts to detect and analyze disinformation and other forms of harmful information (HI) related to global issues and priority contexts across digital platforms: Tracks and analyses HI trends, campaigns’ patterns, actors, sources, motives, and influence tactics used in disinformation campaigns and potential impacts.
  • Provides ad hoc support to delegations for deeper and/or complementary analysis within short response timeframes.
    • Conducts in-depth analysis to understand network dynamics, connections, and relationships. Investigates the socio-political drivers of mis-and disinformation, connecting the dots between online & offline detection.
    • Applies digital investigation and fact checking methods to trace and profile sources of harmful information, verify content and authenticity.
    • Creates timely, actionable, and engaging strategic reports tailored to help internal stakeholders understand emerging threats and areas requiring attention.
    • Regularly documents findings to systematize knowledge and contributes to quarterly reporting with insights on dynamics, actors, and drivers of harmful information campaigns.
    • Partners with data scientist to leverage machine learning and AI and collaborate on network and trends analyses, study bot activity, deep fakes and other AI generated or modified content.
    • Contributes to the establishment of an efficient harmful information global detection system by advising and coaching environmental scanning practitioners.
    • Evaluates and recommends OSINT tools, methodologies, and best practices to improve efficiency of data-gathering and analysis.

REQUIRED PROFILE

  • Master’s degree in journalism, Communications, Political Science, Data Science, Sociology, or related field.
  • 7+ years’ experience in social media analysis, OSINT, digital journalism, fact-checking, threat intelligence, or related field.
  • Strong interest in and deep understanding of social and geopolitical factors and conflict dynamics.
  • Proficiency in social media monitoring tools and disinformation research platforms.
  • Expertise in advanced open-source search techniques, tools, and software: including geospatial analysis, Google dorking, meta data mining, link analysis, and deep web search.
  • Hands-on experience with image, video, and social media verification tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English with the ability to translate complex findings into strategic insights.
  • Multilingual capabilities for identifying misinformation trends in global markets: working knowledge of French, Arabic, Spanish, or Russian is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of legal and ethical guidelines in data collection and analysis. Knowledge of cybersecurity fundamentals & privacy and data protection regulations.
  • Knowledge and experience in coding (R, Python) an asset.
  • An innate desire to dig deeper and uncover hidden information.
  • Proactive problem-solving approach and attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize vast amounts of information and identify key insights.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and coordinating complex tasks across multidisciplinary and global teams.
  • Strong team player, capable of collaborating effectively.
